“Please, my mommy’s dying!” a barefoot 5-year-old begged in the midnight rain. While other cars ignored the collapsing pregnant woman, I ordered my driver to stop. But when I knelt in the mud in my $5,000 suit and saw the dying woman’s face, the words she gasped out made my blood run cold…

She looked at me, confused.

“It was you,” I said, nodding toward Lily on the swing, “who raised a child with the extraordinary courage to run into the dark and ask a stranger for help. And it was Ryan’s sacrifice that kept us all alive to see this day.”

From the swing, soaring high into the warm spring air, Lily shouted back over her shoulder:

“And God made us find each other in the rain!”

They both laughed, the sound mingling with the rustling leaves of the ancient oaks.

But deep down, in the quiet, sacred spaces of my heart, I knew it was absolutely true.

I stopped pushing the swing for a moment, closed my eyes, and looked up at the vast, clear blue sky, letting the warm sun wash over my face. And for the first time in decades, I whispered a quiet, sincere thank you into the wind.

Because I had spent my entire life building an empire of gold, firmly believing I had absolutely nothing of value inside my chest.

Only to discover that everything I ever truly needed…

Had arrived in the fragile cry of a newborn child…

On a cold, empty street…

In the exact middle of the night.
