*PART 4: WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW - YOUR 10-STEP ACTION PLAN*
You found it last night. Do this today:
*STEP 1: Don’t Panic, But Don’t Ignore It*
Put the tick in a ziplock bag or jar. You may want it for identification later.
*STEP 2: Check Yourself and Everyone in the House*
Full body check. Use a mirror or have someone help. Check:
- Behind ears
- In hairline
- Under arms
- Around waist
- Between legs
- Behind knees
- Between toes
*STEP 3: Check Your Pets*
Run a flea comb through dogs and cats. Check ears, between toes, and under collars. If you find one, remove it with tweezers.
*STEP 4: Wash All Bedding in Hot Water*
Sheets, pillowcases, blankets, comforter. Hot water + high heat dryer for 30 minutes kills ticks.
*STEP 5: Vacuum Your Bedroom Thoroughly*
Mattress seams, bed frame, carpet, corners. Immediately throw the vacuum bag outside.
*STEP 6: Check Your Clothes*
Anything you wore in the last 2 days that went outside. Toss in dryer on high heat for 10 minutes before washing.
*STEP 7: Remove the Tick Properly If Anyone Was Bitten*
Use fine-tipped tweezers. Grasp close to skin and pull straight up. Don’t twist. Clean with alcohol.
*STEP 8: Save the Tick*
Put it in alcohol in a jar. Write the date. If anyone gets sick, doctors will want to see it.
*STEP 9: Monitor for Symptoms for 30 Days*
Fever, rash, fatigue, muscle aches. If anything shows up, see a doctor and mention the tick.
*STEP 10: Call a Professional If You Find More*
One tick = accident. 5 ticks = you may have a bigger issue and need pest control.
*PART 5: HOW TO PREVENT THIS FROM EVER HAPPENING AGAIN*
Ticks want 3 things: hosts, humidity, and hiding places. Take those away.
*Outside Your Home: Yard Defense*
*1. Keep Grass Short*
Ticks love tall grass. Mow regularly.
*2. Create a 3-Foot Barrier*
Wood chips or gravel between your lawn and wooded areas. Ticks hate crossing dry areas.
*3. Remove Leaf Litter*
Rake leaves. Ticks overwinter in them.
*4. Discourage Wildlife*
Deer, mice, and raccoons bring ticks. Fence gardens, secure trash.
*5. Treat Your Yard*
In spring and fall, you can use tick tubes or professional spraying. Focus on shady, moist areas.
*Inside Your Home: House Defense*
*1. Treat Your Pets Year-Round*
Use vet-recommended tick prevention: collars, chews, or topicals. This is the single best thing you can do.
*2. Check Pets After Outside Time*
Make it a routine: walk in, treat, check.
