I lent my phone to a homeless teenager at a gas station: the one who whispered to me before giving it back made my blood freeze.

Marcus had refused to provide the evidence that David wanted, so David had started creating them himself.

The folder also contained photographs that portrayed me in shops, pharmacies and traffic lights.

Then I found a draft petition asking for my legal protection because of “reduced mental capacity.”

Behind all this were an evaluation of my cabin on the lake and a revised purchase proposal from the builder.

An e-mail from the lawyer explained that, once David became my guardian, he could apply for court authorization to sell the assets in my name.

That was the real plan.

David was trying to fabricate evidence that would prove my inability to run my business, so I could control and sell my inheritance.

I photographed each document and returned the office exactly as I found it.

Then I called my friend Karen.

“Today I need you to be my lawyer, not my friend.”

After listening to everything, he gave me an education.

“Don’t face it. He spent months preparing all this. We’ll be smarter for another week.”

PART 2: THE PERFECT PUBLIC SCENE
I met Marcus at a diner along the way two days later.

David had contacted him by offering him extra money for photographs that portrayed me confused or while drinking in public.

“When?” I asked.

“Saturday. He said he would send the address.”

That night, David poured himself in to drink and announced that he had booked a dinner table for us on Saturday.

It was a restaurant near the lakeside cabin.
