There was silence.
“Mark, who is Emily?”
His voice was quiet.
“My daughter.”
I sat down on the floor.
“You have a daughter?”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me?”
“I wanted to explain.”
“You’ve had fourteen years to explain.”
“I know.”
“Then explain now.”
He took a long breath.
“She wasn’t a secret because I was living another life. She was my daughter from before we met. Her name is Emily.”
I looked at the photographs again.
“What happened?”
“My relationship with her mother ended when Emily was young. We had disagreements about custody and eventually lost contact. I tried to stay involved. I went through legal channels and spent years trying to reconnect with them.”
“Did you abandon her?”
“No.”
His answer came immediately.
“No, Lena. I never wanted to leave her.”
“Then why keep this place hidden?”
His voice became unsteady.
“Because I couldn’t bring myself to throw her things away.”
I didn’t know what to say.
When Mark returned home that night, we sat across from each other in the living room.
I placed the storage key on the table between us.
“Tell me everything.”
He did.
Emily had been born before our relationship. Her mother, Claire, had eventually moved away. Mark had tried to maintain contact, but circumstances became increasingly difficult. Communication stopped, legal efforts went nowhere, and over time he lost contact with his daughter.
The storage unit became the place where he kept everything connected to her.
