I Wasn't Alone After All
I stood on that deserted road and looked at my phone.
Wait.
My phone.
I didn't have one.
My son had taken it earlier, telling me I wouldn't need it where I was supposedly going.
That was when I smiled for the first time.
Because my husband had anticipated even that.
Inside my handbag was a second phone.
An old one.
Fully charged.
With a number my children didn't know.
I turned it on.
There were several messages.
One was from my attorney.
Another was from the bank.
And another was from someone who worked with the business.
I read them slowly.
Everything was already moving.
My husband hadn't simply left me money.
He had left me a plan.
