After My Husband’s Funeral, My Son Left Me on a Dirt Road — He Had No Idea What I Had Already Put in Place

The Call That Changed Everything

I called my attorney.

She answered immediately.

"Are you safe?"

I looked down the empty road.

"I'm safe."

"Where are you?"

I gave her the location.

There was a pause.

Then she said, "I'll have someone come get you."

I closed my eyes.

For the first time since my husband died, I felt something other than grief.

I felt protected.

Not because someone was rescuing me.

Because my husband and I had prepared.

My attorney then asked the question I had been avoiding.

"Do you want to proceed with the documents we discussed?"

I looked toward the road where my son's SUV had disappeared.

"Yes."

There was no hesitation.

"Proceed."
