I Never Forgot That Road
I eventually drove back to the place where my son had left me.
The road looked completely different.
The same fields.
The same gravel. omar
The same bend in the distance.
But I wasn't the same woman who had stood there before.
That day, I had believed my life was ending.
Instead, it was beginning again.
I didn't return to that road because I wanted revenge.
I returned because I wanted to remember.
I wanted to remember the moment I stopped begging people to value me.
The moment I stopped confusing being a mother with being powerless.
The moment I realized that losing my husband didn't mean losing myself.
I stood there for a while.
Then I turned around and went home.
My son thought he was leaving a helpless widow on an empty road.
He didn't realize he was giving her the one thing she needed most: the freedom to stop living according to his expectations.
