They Had Already Chosen a Place for Me
The following morning, my daughter showed up with a suitcase.
It wasn't mine.
I stared at it.
"What's that?"
"We packed a few things for you."
I almost laughed.
"A few things?"
"You won't need everything."
"Where am I going?"
My son walked in behind her.
"We found a place that might be good for you."
I felt something inside me go completely still.
"A place?"
"A senior community."
I stared at him.
"I'm not going to a senior community."
"Mom, please."
"I'm not helpless."
"We didn't say you were."
"You brought a suitcase."
He looked frustrated.
"We're trying to make this easier."
"For whom?"
Nobody answered.
That silence told me more than words could have.
