The Strange Noise Outside
That night, I couldn't sleep.
I had already been lying in bed for hours, staring at the ceiling and wondering how an ordinary household could suddenly consume so much electricity.
Eventually, I heard something outside.
It wasn't particularly loud, but it was unusual enough to catch my attention.
I got out of bed and walked toward the window.
At first, I couldn't make sense of what I was seeing.
Then I switched on the outside light.
There, parked as close to my driveway as possible, was my neighbor Monica's electric car.
And running from the vehicle toward the side of my garage was a charging cable.
I stared at it for several seconds.
Then I realized where the cable was plugged in.
My outdoor electrical outlet.
My heart started pounding.
I threw on a robe, walked outside and approached her car.
“Monica, what are you doing?”
She turned toward me without looking particularly concerned.
“Charging my car,” she replied.
I pointed toward the cable.
“From my house?”
She shrugged.
“Yeah. What's the big deal?”
For a moment, I genuinely couldn't believe the conversation was happening.
“The big deal,” I said, trying desperately to stay calm, “is that you're using my electricity.”
Monica looked at me as though I'd just complained about someone borrowing a cup of sugar.
“Oh, please.”
I told her my electricity bill had nearly doubled.
She laughed.
“It's probably only a few dollars.”
That response stunned me even more than discovering the cable.
It wasn't an accident.
It wasn't a misunderstanding.
She knew exactly what she was doing.
