An Important Lesson About Boundaries
The story might sound like it's really about an electricity bill.
It isn't.
It's about boundaries.
There is a huge difference between borrowing something after asking and taking it because you assume the owner won't object.
There's a difference between being generous and being taken advantage of.
And there's a difference between keeping the peace and allowing someone to repeatedly disrespect you.
For years, I had chosen the easiest response.
I didn't want arguments.
I didn't want conflict.
I didn't want neighbors gossiping about me.
But eventually, avoiding conflict can create an even bigger problem.
When you never establish a boundary, some people assume there isn't one.
