It Wasn't the First Boundary Monica Had Crossed
As Eleanor walked back into her house, she started thinking about other incidents.
Months earlier, her garden gnome had disappeared.
She had searched around the yard but couldn't find it.
Then, weeks later, she noticed the same gnome sitting in Monica's yard.
It had been painted blue.
Eleanor knew it was hers.
But instead of confronting Monica, she had convinced herself that perhaps there was some misunderstanding.
Then there was the lawn mower.
It disappeared for several days before eventually turning up again.
It was damaged and had no fuel.
Again, Eleanor said nothing.
She had told herself that maintaining peace with neighbors was more important than arguing over small things.
But now she wondered whether her silence had simply encouraged Monica to continue.
