“You believed me”
A week later, George called Emily to her studio.
The young woman came in nervously.
“Did you want to see me, sir?”
George got up.
I wanted to thank you.
Emily smiled shyly.
“I just did what anyone would have done.
George denied with his head.
"No. Not anyone would have risked her job to protect a person who never treated her well.
Emily looked down.
Then George handed him an envelope.
She tried to refuse it.
I can't accept this.
“It’s not a sorry gift,” George replied. It's a help for your mother. And I want you to keep working here only if you want.
Emily opened the envelope and burst into tears.
The real ending
Months later, George did something that surprised his entire family.
He didn't get married again.
Nor did he allow the experience to make him a distrustful and bitter man.
He reconciled with his children and began to spend more time with them and his grandchildren.
She also helped Emily find a more stable way to work while her mother was receiving the treatment she needed.
One Sunday, while the whole family was gathered in the garden, George lifted his lemonade glass.
“For a long time I thought having money meant having everything,” he said. Then I thought that having a young wife meant that life was giving me a second chance.
He looked at his children.
“Now I know that a second chance is not to find someone who fills an empty house. It consists of learning to recognize who is next to you when you no longer have anything to gain.
Sarah hugged her father.
And George understood something he would never forget:
Sometimes the person we least expect may be the one to save us from the greatest betrayal.
Emily, the woman Lauren had treated as if she were worthless, had been precisely the one who proved to have the greatest value.
And since that night, George never judged a person again because of his appearance, his economic position or the place he occupied inside a house.
Because he learned that true wealth is not always in bank accounts or properties. Sometimes it is in having a person close to telling you the truth when everyone else prefers to keep quiet.
