The children were at the top of the stairs.
Lily was silently holding her brother's hand.
Ben just asked one question:
“Dad, when are you going back?”
Chris did not answer.
He's gone.
And he never called us again.
I thought nothing worse could happen to our family.
Five months later, in the same hospital, the doctor sat down in front of him again for the second time.
This time I had Ben's results in his hands.
As soon as I saw the expression on his face, I understood it before I said a single word.
Ben had cancer, too.
My two sons.
My twins.
Born the same day, inseparable throughout his life and now fighting against the same terrible disease.
It felt like our house had moved to the hospital.
When Lily was receiving chemotherapy, Ben would sit next to her.
When Ben felt bad, Lily held her hand.
The only person who helped us was my father, George.
Every night I went to the hospital and read the children stories about the ocean.
One day, Ben asked him:
“Grandpa, can you see where the ocean ends?”
"No.
Lily smiled.
“Then I want to see him even once.
“Me too,” Ben said immediately.
At that moment I turned to the window.
The doctors had already told me that Lily's treatment was not giving the results they expected.
I didn't know how long we had left.
That same night, my father gave me an envelope.
Take them to see the ocean.
Inside was enough money for plane tickets and three nights in a hotel.
Where did this come from?
Of my savings.
Two weeks later, we were facing the ocean.
When Lily and Ben first saw the water, they stood still, holding hands.
Then they ran to the waves.
For the first time in months, I heard my children really laugh.
But that night, when we returned to the hotel, someone knocked on our door.
He was the manager of the hotel.
He had a dark blue box in his hands.
He looked at me very seriously.
“Mrs. Miller, there’s something about this journey that you don’t know.
I FELT LIKE THE SOIL DISAPPEARED UNDER MY FEET...
The continuation of the story is in the first comment

I opened the box.
Inside were two small silver bracelets with the names Lily and Ben engraved.
I recognized them immediately.
Chris had bought them the day the twins were born.
There was also a letter above the box.
I read the front line and my hands started to shake.
The hotel manager lowered his voice.
—El padre de sus hijos está aquí. La está esperando abajo.
For a moment I couldn't move.
Lily had taken the bracelet with her name and watched her carefully.
Ben was staring at me.
“Mom, did you send this?
I didn't answer.
The letter was still in my hand.
I finally found the strength to keep reading.
Chris had written that he had paid for the entire trip.
My father had simply agreed to give me the money saying it was his because they both knew that if I discovered the truth, I would never have accepted it.
The following lines were even harder to read.
Chris wrote that the day he learned of Lily’s diagnosis, she had felt a terrible fear.
Not just because of the disease.
I was afraid of losing her daughter.
And instead of staying and fighting beside us, he fled.
But everything changed the day when, months later, he learned that Ben had also been diagnosed.
He could not believe that he had abandoned his sick daughter and that, while hiding from his own fear, his son would have also fallen ill.
Chris wrote:
“I realized that the worst thing in the world is not being afraid of losing your children. The worst thing is not being there when they need you the most.”
I immediately called my father.
Did you know that?
There was a long silence on the other side of the line.
"Yes.
How could you hide it from me?
My father took a deep breath.
Because the kids wanted to see the ocean. I did this for them, not Chris.
“He abandoned us, Dad.
I know. I haven't forgiven him yet either. But when he heard about Ben's disease, he came to my house. He didn't even get in. He stayed at the door and only asked me for one thing: that he would allow him to arrange this trip for them.
I finished the call.
Ben was sitting on the edge of the bed.
Did Dad leave us because Lily got sick?
Lily looked at him immediately.
I knelt in front of my kids.
"No. It wasn't for any of you. His father was afraid and made a very bad decision.
Lily remained silent for a few seconds.
“And now it’s downstairs?”
I nodded.
Do you want to see it?
Ben did not answer.
I had such a serious expression that for a moment I forgot that I was only six years old.
Finally he spoke:
If he's scared again, will he leave again?
I had no answer.
Lily took her brother's hand.
“Let’s ask him.
The three of us went down to the lobby.
Chris was by a big window.
I had changed so much that at first I hardly recognized him.
He had lost weight.
He had deep dark circles.
Gray tufts had already appeared in her hair.
When he saw the children, he stood still.
For several seconds no one moved.
Entonces Chris cayó de rodillas.
“Hi, Lily. Hello, Ben.
Ben didn't come close.
—¿Por qué te fuiste?
Chris bajó la cabeza.
Because I was a coward.
—¿Tenías miedo de Lily?
—No.
Ben hizo otra pregunta.
And when did you know that I was sick too?
He still held the silver bracelet.
“Did you keep this?”
—Sí. Las dos.
Why?
La voz de Chris se quebró.
—Porque pensé en ustedes todos los días.
Lily remained silent for a moment.
Then he said:
If you were thinking about us, you should have called us.
“You’re right.
The next morning, the kids wanted Chris to come with us into the ocean.
On the beach, the children began to build another sand castle.
Chris immediately began to rebuild it with his hands.
Ben se rio.
—Tranquilo, papá. Podemos construirlo otra vez.
Lily looked at Chris.
But don’t run away this time.
Chris stood still.
Luego dijo en voz baja:
—No lo haré.
And for the first time I thought maybe I really understood what I had done.
Over the next few months, Chris never left again.
He was with the children during each treatment.
When Ben didn't want to walk into the hospital room, Chris would sit next to him until he was ready.
Seven months later, the doctors told us they could no longer do anything else.
On his last night, Lily was very weak.
Ben, who was still receiving treatment, was sitting by his sister's hospital bed.
He held one of his hands.
I was holding the other one.
Chris estaba sentado cerca de sus pies.
Lily asked us to reproduce the ocean wave recording that she had kept on the phone.
The room was filled with the soft sound of the sea.
A few minutes later, Lily opened her eyes.
He looked at his brother.
“Ben, you have to go back to the ocean.
Ben was crying.
“We will come back together.
Lily gave her a faint smile.
If I can't, then you'll go for both of you.
Then he looked at his father.
"Dad.
Chris came over.
I'm here.
Did you stay this time?
Chris held his little daughter's hand.
"Yes.
-Okay.
Those were in his last words.
That night, Lily didn't open her eyes again.
Ben's treatment continued for many more months.
Chris wasn't missing a single day.
Two years later, we finally got the news I had prayed for every day.
Ben's analyses no longer showed signs of the disease.
That summer we returned to the same ocean.
Me, Ben and Chris.
Ben took the two silver bracelets out of his pocket.
He placed his own around the doll.
And he put Lily's on the sand.
Then he began to build the same kind of sand castle that they had built during that first trip.
Chris sat down beside him.
A wave came and destroyed half the castle.
Chris extended his hand to quickly rebuild it.
But Ben stopped him.
“Don’t worry, Dad.
He looked out over the ocean.
“Lily used to say that just because something breaks doesn’t mean it’s all over.
Then he took another handful of sand.
Chris did the same.
And together they began to rebuild what the wave had destroyed.
