My son and I secretly went up to my pilot husband’s flight to surprise him, but his words for the speakers left us speechless.

“Champion, if you’re reading this, it means you finally fulfilled your dream of flying with me. Thank you for making every flight special.”

Mason hugged the card against his chest.

Then I opened mine.

There was only one sentence:

“I didn’t need you to surprise me. I just needed to know that you still wanted to share the sky with me.”

When we landed in Chicago, Tyler got out of the cabin.

Mason ran to him.

Tyler squatted down and hugged him tightly.

Did you see me piloting?

“Yes!

“And?

Mason lifted his drawing.

You are the best pilot in the world.

Tyler laughed.

Then he hugged me.

Did you really think I wasn’t going to find out?

I tried to be discreet!

I know.

When did you find out?

“Yesterday.

Why didn’t you say anything?

Tyler looked at our son.

Because I wanted to give you a chance to surprise me.

We were left hugged all three in the middle of the terminal.

I realized something that night.

Sometimes we think a surprise is to hide a secret.

But the best surprises are those that end up reminding us of something much more important:

that, at the end of every trip, there is always someone waiting for you to come home.
