My boss called me at 11 p.m. and said, “Come with me to the hotel tonight. If you don’t come, you’re fired... and don’t tell anyone.” I went... but when I opened the door, I saw him waiting inside and I heard what he wanted me to do, I couldn't believe what kara was hearing

“My grandmother’s ring. My mother gave it to me years ago. He wants to see it on the finger of the woman I'm supposed to marry."

I looked at the reverend.

“So, there won’t really be a wedding?”

Mr. Harrison hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

I took a step back.

“No.”

“Emma...”

“No. Absolutely not.”

“My mother asked if the Reverend Keller could make a little blessing. Nothing legally binding. No documents. No marriage license. Just a few words.”

“Did you bring me here without telling me anything, threatened my work and expected you to take part in a fake wedding?”

His face was overshadowed.

“You are right.”

“I know I’m right.”

“I panicked.”

“That doesn’t justify it.”

“No.”

He didn't argue.

That surprised me.

Instead, he walked to the table, took his phone and put it in front of me.

On the screen was a photograph of an old woman. She was sitting on a hospital bed, smiling faintly.

“I know.”

“¿Y amenazarme lo mejoraba?”

“No.”

Ahora parecía avergonzado.

“Si sales por esa puerta, seguirás teniendo tu trabajo. Lo pondré por escrito esta misma noche. Me equivoqué.”

Eso cambió algo.

No lo suficiente como para perdonarlo.

Pero sí lo suficiente como para escucharlo.

“¿Cuánto tiempo?”

Levantó la mirada.
