woke before sunrise and opened my bedroom door out of habit.
The hallway outside Mom’s room was empty.
Tyler’s pillow wasn’t there.
Neither was his dinosaur blanket.
He had slept in his own bed all night.
Jason eventually called Mom and asked whether he could come over.
When he finally came, he brought no groceries.
No tools.

He apologized.
Mom listened to everything he had to say.
She didn’t forgive him on the spot.
Instead, she told him that rebuilding trust would happen on her terms, not his.
A few months later, Mom was back on her feet.
Last weekend, she called Tyler into the kitchen and asked him to help her organize some paperwork.
She pulled out a new folder and wrote across the front in huge letters:
ASK ME FIRST.
Tyler laughed sheepishly.
Mom handed him the marker.
“Add something.”
He thought about it for
