The woman lowered her voice.
“What about her sister?”
Ryan's expression changed.
It was subtle.
But unmistakable.
His face became cold.
“Claire is becoming a problem.”
I covered my mouth.
The woman stared at him.
“How much does she know?”
Ryan looked toward the door.
Then he said:
“Too much.”
I felt the room disappear around me.
The woman leaned closer.
“What do you want me to do?”
Ryan placed a thick envelope on the table.
Cash.
A lot of it.
Then he spoke.
“Delay her.”
The woman frowned.
“Delay her?”
“Keep her away from Alice until after the wedding.”
My hands began shaking violently.
Then I heard the word that changed everything.
“Inheritance.”
Ryan was talking about my inheritance.
My grandmother had left me a substantial trust.
Ryan knew about it.
I'd never thought much about the money.
It wasn't something I discussed frequently.
But Ryan had been asking questions.
Questions I had interpreted as normal conversations about our future.
Now they sounded completely different.
The woman asked:
“And after Alice signs?”
Ryan replied:
“Everything transfers.”
My heart seemed to stop.
The woman hesitated.
“And Claire?”
Ryan's eyes hardened.
“She needs to stay out of it.”
“What if she refuses?”
Ryan leaned closer.
Then he said:
“Then I'll handle it myself.”
The video ended.
I couldn't move.
I stared at the blank screen.
The man in the video was my husband.
But I didn't recognize him.
Not anymore.
Claire Had Been Investigating Him
Megan slid a folder across the table.
“There was more.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“Claire had been investigating Ryan for months.”
Inside were photographs.
Bank statements.
Emails.
Copies of financial records.
Notes from a private investigator.
I stared at one page.
Ryan had enormous debts.
Another showed gambling losses.
Another showed evidence that he'd been involved with other women.
There were messages suggesting he had been planning his financial future around my inheritance.
I felt physically sick.
“He was going to use me.”
Megan nodded.
Claire had discovered that Ryan's finances were collapsing.
He wasn't marrying me because he loved me.
He was marrying me because he believed my inheritance would solve his problems.
Then I found another note.
Claire's handwriting.
Alice,
I tried to tell you.
I tried every way I could.
Ryan isn't marrying you because he loves you. He's marrying your money.
I pressed the paper against my chest.
I remembered Claire's face at the bachelorette party.
Her shaking hands.
Her tears.
Her words.
Please trust me.
I had refused.
She had been trying to save me.
And I had been angry at her for interfering in my happiness.
