“And she's also marrying into a family that apparently mistakes arrogance for culture.”
Silence.
Complete silence.
Claire's mouth fell open.
Luca stared at me.
Philippe looked as though someone had suddenly changed the rules of a game he thought he was winning.
Hélène was the first to recover.
“You speak French?”
I smiled.
“Fluently.”
Philippe's face reddened.
“For how long?”
“About forty years.”
Claire stared at me.
“Mom?”
I turned toward her.
“I lived in Lyon for eight years.”
Her eyes widened.
“What?”
“I moved there when I was twenty-two.”
“You never told me.”
“I mentioned it.”
“You said you lived in France.”
“I did.”
“You made it sound like a semester abroad.”
I laughed softly.
“It was considerably more complicated than that.”
Philippe shifted in his chair.
I looked at him.
“You were saying my daughter lacks cultural foundation.”
He opened his mouth.
I continued before he could speak.
“She has traveled. She reads. She works with people from around the world. She has built a career. She speaks enough French to understand your son's family. She understands more cultures than you realize.”
Hélène lowered her eyes.
I wasn't finished.
“You described her as simple.”
I glanced at Claire.
“She is simple in one sense. She doesn't need to make herself larger by making someone else smaller.”
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
I turned back to Hélène.
“You called my life limited.”
I smiled sadly.
“Perhaps it was. But it was my life.”
Then I leaned back.
“And you made one mistake tonight.”
Philippe looked at me.
“You assumed silence meant ignorance.”
No one spoke.
Claire's Reaction
Claire suddenly stood.
“Mom.”
I looked at her.
She walked around the table and came toward me.
“I don't know what to say.”
“You don't have to say anything.”
“Yes, I do.”
She looked toward Luca's parents.
“Were you really saying those things about me?”
Hélène looked uncomfortable.
“Claire, it wasn't meant to be cruel.”
“But you said I was simple.”
“It was a misunderstanding.”
“No,” Claire said.
