Some larvae are extremely small and pale, making them look like tiny white threads when they move through water.

In certain berries, fruit flies and other small insects can be associated with larvae developing in damaged or overripe fruit. Some agricultural pests are also capable of laying eggs on fruit, where larvae later develop.

This is one reason why damaged, bruised, or overripe fruit deserves closer inspection.

But there's another important point:

**Seeing something emerge after soaking does not automatically prove that every berry in the container is infested.**

One piece of fruit may have attracted an insect while the rest may be completely unaffected.

## Why Does Salt Water Make Them Come Out?

Salt water is often presented online as a magical method for forcing hidden insects out of fruit.

There is some logic behind the observation: soaking produce can cause small organisms on or near the surface to move or become more visible. A salty solution may also alter the environment around small organisms.

## Does Finding a Larva Mean the Strawberries Are Dangerous?

Don't panic.

First, stop eating the fruit and inspect it.

Separate any berries that are visibly damaged, soft, moldy, leaking, or otherwise suspicious.

If you find a single questionable berry, you may decide to discard it and thoroughly rinse the remaining sound fruit.

If numerous berries contain visible larvae or signs of infestation, however, discarding the entire container may be the more sensible choice.

This is especially true if the fruit is already deteriorating.

If you purchased the berries recently, consider taking photographs of the problem and contacting the store or producer. Depending on where you bought them, you may be able to request a refund or report a quality issue.

You don't need to touch the organisms unnecessarily.

Simply document what you found and dispose of the affected food appropriately.

## What If the Berries Look Perfect?

This is where things become less dramatic.

Fresh strawberries can look completely normal on the outside while having small areas of damage that aren't immediately visible.

But the fact that insects can occasionally be associated with fresh produce doesn't mean that every apparently perfect strawberry contains hidden worms.

Millions of people eat fresh berries every day without encountering anything unusual.

Commercial fruit production also involves inspection, sorting, packaging, transportation, and retail handling. These processes reduce the likelihood that heavily damaged produce reaches consumers, although they cannot guarantee that every individual berry will be completely free of insects.

Nature simply doesn't work that way.
