"I married the boy who once bullied me in school because he promised he had changed. But the morning after our wedding, he threw me out of his house. So when I saw him again at a store at thirty-eight, my first instinct was to leave. “Maggie, is that you?” he asked. He was not the same boy I remembered. He looked older, weaker, sitting in a wheelchair with trembling hands. Then he apologized. “I was awful back then,” he said. “But I’m not that person anymore.” I didn’t believe him immediately. We exchanged numbers, but I assumed that would be the end of it. It wasn’t. Kevin kept showing me he had changed. He donated to shelters, supported a child overseas, and kept telling me I meant everything to him. Slowly, I stopped protecting my heart so tightly. When he proposed, I still had doubts. But he looked at me and said, “I love you. I’ve changed.” And I believed him. Our wedding felt perfect. But once the bedroom door closed, Kevin became distant and cold. The next morning, he looked at me and said, “Pack your things and leave.” No reason. No apology. Nothing. It felt like one final cruel joke from the boy who had already broken me once. I cried the whole drive home. When I got there, I collapsed from exhaustion. A loud knock woke me later. When I opened the door, a man stood outside. “I’m Kevin’s lawyer,” he said. I thought he was there with divorce papers. “I’m not interested,” I snapped. “Tell Kevin to handle the divorce himself.” The lawyer’s expression changed. “Kevin asked me to keep this from you until the end,” he said. “But now you need to know what he truly prepared for you.” Then he handed me a letter.
