# I Found a Woman’s Bag at the Mall—and One Strange Metal Tool Inside Left Me Completely Stumped
I never expected a routine trip to the mall to turn into a mystery.
I had gone there for something completely ordinary. I needed to pick up a few things, grab a coffee, and head home. It was the kind of afternoon that usually disappears from memory almost as soon as it is over.
Then, near one of the quieter sections of the mall, I noticed a handbag sitting alone.
At first, I walked right past it.
There were people everywhere. Shoppers were carrying bags, parents were keeping track of children, employees were moving between stores, and people were constantly putting things down while checking their phones. I assumed the handbag belonged to someone nearby.
But after a few steps, I looked back.
The bag was still there.
I waited.
No one came rushing back.
I looked around again. Nothing.
That was when I started wondering whether someone had accidentally left it behind.
I know there are all sorts of reasons to be cautious about picking up someone else's belongings. An unattended bag can be a serious matter, especially in a crowded public place. So I didn't immediately open it or start going through it.
Instead, I approached the nearest mall employee and explained what I had found.
The employee suggested that I bring it to the mall's lost-and-found or security desk. That seemed like the obvious thing to do.
So I picked it up and carried it over.
And that's where the situation became unexpectedly complicated.
The employee asked whether I had noticed anything that could help identify the owner.
I hadn't.
There was no obvious name attached to the outside.
No luggage tag.
No business card.
Nothing that immediately told us who the handbag belonged to.
The employee asked whether there was identification inside.
Since the goal was simply to get the bag back to its owner, we briefly checked for something like an ID card or contact information.
There was nothing obvious.
No driver's license.
No phone.
No wallet with a name.
No handwritten note containing an address.
Nothing that immediately solved the mystery.
And that's when I noticed the strange object.
It was a small metal tool.
I picked it up and stared at it.
Then I turned it over.
I looked at it from another angle.
And I still couldn't figure out what it was.
I have seen plenty of unusual household objects over the years. I'm not exactly an expert on tools, but I'm reasonably familiar with ordinary things.
This wasn't one of them.
It was small enough to fit comfortably in the palm of my hand, made of metal, and shaped in a way that seemed to suggest it had a very specific purpose.
But what purpose?
I had absolutely no idea.
It wasn't shaped like a screwdriver.
It didn't look like a key.
It wasn't obviously a piece of jewelry.
It didn't resemble anything I normally associated with cosmetics, sewing, cooking, or household repairs.
I turned it over again.
Nothing.
There was no label.
No manufacturer's name.
No obvious marking that would tell me what it was designed to do.
I looked at the mall employee.
They didn't know either.
And suddenly, the handbag that had started as a simple lost-and-found situation had become a tiny mystery.
Of course, the mystery wasn't really the important part.
